원조짜장떡볶이 Original Jjajang Tteokbokki

원조짜장떡볶이 Original Jjajang Tteokbokki

by Mike / Monday, 18 January 2021 / Published in Things to Eat

Tteokbokki is comfort food for us Koreans. We grew up on it as kids running to the local shop in our neighborhood with a dollar in our pocket. Obviously, the prices have gone up from the good ole days. The most common way that it is eaten is usually in a spicy form. This place is known for their Jjajang version (black bean sauce). I, personally, like this version better. It isn’t spicy, but you can spice it up by adding some chili powder on top. And THAT just makes it that much better. It just brings out the flavor of the original sauce so much more.

When you walk up to this shop and you see this steaming cauldron of deliciousness, there is no way that you wouldn’t want to eat some. The owner wanted me to wait to take pictures so that the color of the sauce came out right. I would say that is the right color! In the pot, there is already rice cakes, fish cakes, onions, and leeks. I would be fine eating it just like this, but there are some additional items you can add to it to make it better.

The menu is fairly simple to be honest. 1st item says you can get fried stuff mixed with it or just get it by itself (tteokbokki). 2nd line is for kids (smaller). 3rd line is adding gim mari (glass noodles rolled up in dried seaweed that is fried). 4th line is yaki mandoo (fried dumpling stuffed with just a little bit of glass noodles). 5th is a boiled egg. 6th is soondae (blood sausage) that comes on the side. 7th is a soda (coke, sprite, fanta). Last item is a 2-person set (2 orders of tteokbokki, blood sausage, a drink). If you order the 1st item mixed with fried stuff, she gives you a yaki mandoo and a few pieces of gim mari. I just get one of everything, honestly. It’s so cheap and such a beautiful snack or appetizer.

Definitely worth checking out! I like this place better than the nearby Tteokbokki Town. The only thing it’s missing is some alcohol. Haha. So I just take it to-go and go eat it at the convenient store nearby.
