Won Jo Ho Su Samgyetang 원조호수 삼계탕

Won Jo Ho Su Samgyetang 원조호수 삼계탕

by Mike / Tuesday, 05 January 2021 / Published in Things to Eat

The menu here is really simple. They have one item here and they do it amazing!!!! Samgyetang 삼계탕. It is a whole chicken (and not one of those American chickens on steroids), a normal size chicken inside of a babbling cauldron of a stone bowl. I have eaten many bowls of this soup in numerous of places, but this one is different.

As you can see on the menu to the right, there is one word that is written vertically with 15,000 next to it. That is the one dish that they serve here. All the other items on the right side are all the different types of alcohol that you can drink with it. The top 2 alcohols that are written in red are the recommended ones. The first one being the Omaegi Alcohol 오메기주, which is made out of millet. It tastes a bit earthy and healthy? It is a drink that is made in Jeju Island. The second drink is the Insam Alcohol 임삼주, which is made out of ginseng. I really like drinking this whenever I get Samgyetang or other chicken dishes (braised, steamed, or stewed). It makes you feel healthy and drunk all at the same time! Haha Kill two birds with one stone!

Samgyetang is a soup that is typically eaten on the three hottest days of summer. 초복 Cho Bok (1st hottest day), 중복 Joong Bok (2nd hottest day), and 말복 Mal Bok (last hottest day). There are lines out the door at the majority of these Samgyetang places. There is this theory that we have here. If you eat something hot on a hot day, then your outer body temperature will match your inner body temperature which will in theory will cool you down. I don’t know if it actually works, but I don’t need an excuse to eat this delicious soup.

The broth here is completely different than other places. It is super thick and amazing!

They serve the simplest sides for your soup here. Just one type of kimchi, chili peppers (not spicy and spicy), cucumbers, sliced garlic, and gochujang (chili pepper paste). I highly recommend eating a ton of chili peppers with each bite of your soup. I do enjoy my spice, but for this soup I would recommend the non-spicy ones because they are just so damn delicious. There is a small station that you can get your own free refills. I probably ate half of those peppers by myself.

There is so much going on in this bowl of chicken soup. There are jujubes, ginseng, leeks, chestnut, and other fun medicinal herbs that you will leave feeling full, healthy (as long as you didn’t drink too much), and happy! Trust me for 15,000 won, you won’t find a better deal than this!

If you would like to check out this spot, you can just copy and paste the address below to Google Maps. I will also type it in Korean for you so that you can use Naver Maps when you get here as it works better than Google Maps.
